LEVEL 2 CHAINSAW COURSE - SMALL TREE FELLING

Training Delivery:

Training and assessments conducted by chainsaw guru, Peter Tutt, (Chainsaw / Felling specialist with over 40 years of chainsaw direct industry technical and training experience), holder of Certificate IV Training and Assessment (TAE40116, TAE40110 & TAA40104)
Purpose (prerequisites apply)
Provide participants with: The knowledge and skills to assess, plan and safely carry out manual tree-felling operations for relatively small trees (trunk diameter up to bar length) with a low level of complexity using a chainsaw as per:

  • Australian Standard: AS2727-1997 Chainsaws - Guide to safe working practices
  • SafeWork Australia (2016) Guide for Managing Risks in Tree Trimming and Removal Works.
  • Arboriculture Australia Minimum Industry Standards: MIS315 (2020) Chainsaw Operation and Tree Falling

Location

Preferably on client's premises. A suitable area with trees for falling will need to be provided. If you do not have access to a suitable area, we will endeavour to provide a venue and practical activity site but additional cost may apply.

Duration

  • 1 day for most participants.

  • Some participants, due to a variety of factors, may require more time to develop the knowledge & skills required to demonstrate competency.

    Underpinning Knowledge (Pre-requisites)

    Before commencing the course, the applicant must be competent at operating and maintaining a chainsaw in accordance with AS 2727-1997 "Chainsaws - Guide to Safe Working Practices", and have completed our Chainsaw Operate and Maintain - LEVEL 1 course to ensure underpinning skills and knowledge are demonstrated.

    • Correct Scarf Cut
    • Correct release cut
    • Practical application and skills development

    Assessment

    Supervised written and/or verbal and practical assessment.

    Equipment

    Participants will need to wear their own protective boots and hi-vis shirt. All other required equipment and training notes are provided for participant's use.

    In order to increase training relevance and operator comfort, trainees are encouraged to use any or all their own equipment if practicable.

    This includes:

    • Chainsaw, tools, wedges, fuel and oil
    • Safety equipment
    • - Hard hat
    • - Approved eye protection
    • - Hearing protection (ear plugs or ear muffs)
    • - Safety boots and over-socks (recommended)
    • - Cut resistant trousers or chaps
    • - Work gloves (optional)
    • - Sunscreen
    • - High visibility clothing for forest if applicable

    Demonstration of Competence:

    From experience, we find that people have different levels of ability and experience when it comes to handling chainsaws. Some participants, may require more time to develop their skills to a competent level.

    Personal Requirements:

    Depending on location of the training, and availability of take away food outlets, it is advisable for trainees to bring a packed lunch and plenty of drinking water to each training day.
